Abstract

In spite of the unhappy nature of Anglo-Irish relations and although the English response to the Irish ailments was recognizably inadequate, particularly during the Great famine, it makes no doubt that throughout the 19th century the Irish question regularly exercised the minds of English politicians, publicists, novelists and social reformers. Diaries, novels, magazines and political speeches are dotted with alternative visions of Hibernia that testify to the English re-imagining of the sister island.
