Omphalomesenteric duct and urachal remnants

Abstract

The umbilical cord remnant usually separates in the neonatal period and its persistence beyond the first couple of months is considered abnormal. Umbilical abnormalities may present with failure of the umbilical cord to separate, omphalitis, mass lesions, or discharge. The commonest umbilical lesion in the neonate is an umbilical granuloma. Other abnormalities are umbilical polyps, omphalomesenteric duct and urachal remnants. It is essential to distinguish between these conditions in order to initiate appropriate treatment.
