The 1998 Western Isles Challenge is an adventure race sponsored by the outdoor gear manufacturer Lowe Alpine. This feature focuses on the performance of various garments worn by competitors during 80 km of paddling, 240 km of cycling and running and 6,000 metres of ascent to 13 summits. The conclusion is that active wear has room for improvement - a windproof is needed which is effectively breathable and does not cause overheating.
