This chapter presents the anatomy and physiology of the peritoneal barrier as background for understanding the complex process of the transperitoneal transport system. Kinetic models are presented in three general forms: membrane models, compartmental models, and distributed models. Applications of each of these are offered to illustrate the use of each model scheme. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
