Ever since the early 1990s, the collection of data about usage, hits and traffic has become of central importance for the various actors of the Net; the explosion of measurement figures relating to "the public" is an indicator of the market orientation of this medium. This article first examines the relevance of the notion of "audience" when studying the Internet; it then reviews the ups and downs of the Internet market and concludes by assessing the distinctive features of the ways devised to track Internet users.
