Uridine-diphospho-N-acetylglucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc) is an essential precursor of N- or O-linked glycosylation in important metabolic processes (Hart et al. 1989; Herscovics and Orlean 1993). It is known as a substrate of chitin synthase, the product of which is essential for fungal cell wall (Cabib et al. 1982; Milewski et al. 2006), and it also plays important roles in cell wall peptidoglycan synthesis and the disaccharide moiety of lipid A in bacteria (Raetz 1996).
