Laparoscopic-assisted jejunostomy

Abstract

Jejunal feeding has demonstrated marked advantages over gastric feeding in the management of neurologically impaired children affected by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Jejunal feeding tubes significantly reduce the risk of aspiration, often observed when gastric tubes are placed in these patients. This chapter outlines the operation room setup, patient positioning, special instruments and port placement sites for the placement of jejunal tubes using minimal access techniques. The indications, preoperative considerations and technical notes for laparoscopic-assisted jejunostomy have been listed. High-quality images demonstrate step-by-step the procedure of laparoscopic-assisted jejunostomy. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
