Abstract

The patient was a 70-year-old moderately obese female presenting for elective cholecystectomy. She had experienced right upper quadrant pain intermittently over the 3 years prior to presentation, which was associated with the intake of fatty food. An ultrasound of the abdomen demonstrated the presence of fatty liver disease and multiple stones in her gallbladder. Systems review was non-contributory apart from a 35-year smoking history (10 cigarettes/day), moderate alcohol intake (she admitted to five standard drinks/week), and mild lower back pain.
