Monitoring the respiratory status of patients is an essential skill in all aspects of healthcare. In children with congenital heart disease, this can be more difficult or complicated particularly after surgery; despite major advances in technology and monitoring devices, it is clinical examination and skill that will provide the most relevant and pertinent information for practitioners caring for this vulnerable group of patients. This chapter will discuss the clinical skills required for accurate respiratory monitoring of children after heart surgery and some of the monitoring devices that may be used.
