Abstract

The historical development of the study of rough surface contact is intimately connected with attempts to explain Coulomb’s law of friction, in particular, the observation that the tangential force F required to cause sliding is approximately proportional to the applied normal force N and largely independent of the nominal contact area in a wide variety of situations.
