Several years ago, when the University of Minnesota Press approached me about the possibility of editing a series, I had free rein to think about what its rubric would be. At the time, one of the areas with which I had been occupied for a number of years what is no called ‘animal studies,’ though my interest in the topic reached back to my years as an animal rights activist in North Carolina in the mid-to-late-1980s.
