The application of Raman spectroscopy for the study of lattice vibrations and their coupling with carriers in the YBCO compounds is presented. In this respect, the appearance of new phases, the anharmonic behaviour of the oxygen atoms, the possible mixing of modes, the assignment of weak phonon modes, the role of a certain mode which shows characteristic softening with overdoping, and the distribution of the carriers are discussed by examining the effects on the phonon characteristics and the modifications induced in the spectra by the removal of oxygen or by selected cation and oxygen isotopic substitutions.
