Abstract

Surakarta’s city government has acknowledged its responsibility to provide adequate housing and to manage the informal sector. In order to mitigate the challenges posed by informality, several pro-poor programmes have been introduced, such as a social housing programme as well as slum-upgrading and relocation measures. All these multi-sectoral activities show a similar design, involve a broad variety of stakeholders and are oriented on global approaches of inclusive and participative strategies. Summarizing the study, this chapter addresses each of the research questions outlined in the introduction, providing a critical assessment of Surakarta’s housing policy embedded in the national and global context. Looking at the outcomes, the implemented measures look impressive and are evaluated as successful albeit all analysed programmes show improvement potential.
