Abstract

The compacting ability of SHS-hydrides of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, etc. was studied in dependence of the process conditions. The dependences of physical and mechanical properties of obtained compact hydrides from the dispersion and chemical composition of hydride powders, pressure of pressing, temperature of dehydrogenation, etc. were determined. The compacted hydrides are characterized by the density and hardness comparable with the corresponding theoretical parameters of the initial metal. The compacted metal hydrides are of practical interest because they combine the advantages of metal, for instance, the hardness and stability, with the unique moderating ability of hydrogen. By dehydrogenation of the compacted hydrides, strong samples of IVa group metals were prepared. Nano-scale sizes of hydride germs provided the formation of dense samples due to mutual diffusion during the pressing and dehydrogenation processes. The influence of pressing (compacting) pressure, temperature at dehydrogenation, dispersion of initial powder, on the mechanical properties of final metal samples (solidity, micro-hardness, porosity, structure, etc.) was established.
