Mutations leading to sterility or lethality can only be preserved in the heterozygotic state. Further use of such mutations requires considerable time and work to separate heterozygous from homozygous wild-type plants. This study shows that establishing balanced lines, by introducing visible markers linked in trans to such mutations, circumvents these disadvantages.
