Abstract

Basalts occur everywhere—from divergent and convergent plate boundaries to hot spot volcanic chains and major flood basalt provinces. In this chapter, petrological charac- teristics of Mid-Oceanic Ridge Basalts (MORB) and Hawaiian basalts are discussed. We will explore what such characteristics tell us about their modes of origin.
