In this session the papers set out the problems which have to be solved. They emphasised the urgent need to reduce both ammonia and odour emissions from livestock production. The main reasons for concern are: (i) the severe damage which is caused by ammonia emissions to the ecology of natural plant habitats and forests, (ii) the increasing number of odour complaints by the public which is unacceptable and (iii) the financial losses which occur by the removal of nitrogen by ammonia volatilisation which then has to be replaced by nitrogen fertilisers.
