Abstract

Constant change affects the increasingly complex structures of cities. Former urban planning remedies focused on economic factors are being reformulated in an effort to build a more harmonious social climate and a high quality urban environment as the basis for a well-functioning economy. Changes which concern women specifically and which give rise to increased responsibilites for them are enumerated. These have prompted several responses and policy areas which women seek to influence are listed. In order to improve women's participation in urban life their political representation must be enhanced. Illustrative examples are quoted and ways of improving women's integration in urban planning and governing are suggested. Examples of relevant action are the subject of a separate box. -D.G.Price
