This chapter focuses on the mental health issues of basketball players and their impact on athletic performance and success. The prevalence of mental health issues within elite sports is similar to the general population despite some of the advantages many elite basketball players have. It is important that professionals working with elite athletes understand and recognize those mental health issues frequently affecting those in elite sports, as well as implement validated strategies for treatment and rehabilitation of these issues. Sport-related injuries can unmask preexisting symptoms of mental health or be an originating source of distress. Once accurately assessed, coping strategies and mental skills are utilized to reduce mental health symptoms and ameliorate performance-related issues. Coping strategies and mental skills can also improve the return to play process for the athlete and increase the likelihood that they have the skills needed to remain focused, motivated, and compliant with training/recovery demands.
