It was mentioned at the outset of this chapter that constructing a test item is not complete until the item has been thoroughly scrutinized for its quality. This chapter provides the writer with the tools necessary for such scrutiny. As can be seen, these tools include the techniques of conducting a validation study relevant to the preparation of the items, as well as methods for defining items in mathematical terms so that they may be examined by appropriate statistics.
