Abstract

The effects of irrigation and other techniques applied in intensive fruit crop productions in Chile are discussed, with emphasis on roots protection and nematode management strategies. Concepts on resistance and tolerance are given and the important role of the interactions among rootstocks, irrigation practices and nematodes is highlighted. Nematode management options include prevention, chemical treatments and use of plant resistance elicitors. Soil conditions and diagnosis are then reviewed focusing on plant vigor, root system analysis by means of test pits inspections, sampling, application of minirhizotrons and other management strategies.
