In patient with asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB), bacterial endotoxins and lipopolysaccharides are chronically released. This leads to a continous and sustained damage to the red cell membranes, causing early cell destruction and anaemia with ASB which is refractory to hematinics and responds promptly with anti microbials [16]IL-1 directly decreases erythropoietin secretion. IL-1 and TNF-α act through interferon-γ, to suppress the response of the erythroid marrow to erythropoietin. Hepticidin is a protein synthesized in liver in chronic infection and inflammation. It suppresses iron absorption from the gut and release of iron from its storage sites [17].
