Ultrasound (US) is a critical skill for the assessment of soft tissue infections in the austere environment. US is more accurate than palpation for the identification of abscesses, can identify foreign bodies of various compositions, and is useful in the diagnosis of cellulitis. It can also be used to plan for the drainage of abscesses as well as the identification of deep abscess tracts and complications. US can be used to guide the removal of foreign bodies and decreases the size of surgical incision during removal. Regardless of the setting and availability of resources, US is portable, mobile, and provides real-time information that can make a difference in the diagnosis and treatment of soft tissue infections.
