A Brief History of Media Space Research and Mediated Life

Abstract

To contextualize the events, research projects, and commercial deployment of media space, we have created the following timeline. Fundamentally, this time- line should remind the reader that there was a time when audio and video were distinctly separate from computing and their inclusion in computing research was considered unusual. In addition, there has been some confusion about the development of ideas, as the sequence of publication did not correspond to the sequence of investigation and innovation; as a rule of thumb, the earlier the work, the longer the time to publication. This confusion has even led to occasional mis-attribution.
