Abstract

Breast surgery is one of the most difficult fields of aesthetic surgery, because of the complexity of surgical procedures and the relative guidelines defining the aesthetically perfect breast. The authors [1-7] present different dimensions as representative for the aesthetically perfect breast, which means something ideal, which needs no further improvement! The perfect breast is aesthetically entirely appreciated on a perfect trunk and on a perfect body. It is also important to correlate the aesthetically perfect breast with the idea of beauty in different cultures. Many of the famous nude statues' breasts that in Ancient Greece were perceived as aesthetic would nowadays be slightly criticized as too small and therefore proposed for augmentation surgery, whereas the breasts of the nude models painted by Rubens in the Renaissance period would undoubtedly require reduction, according to the contemporary view. At the same time, it is impossible to impose a single standard of breast beauty to women who are so entirely different from the point of view of their height, weight, and constitutional type. The essential goals of breast reduction or mastopexy are to get a predictable result, retain nipple sensitivity, the possibility of lactation, and obtain an excellent aesthetic appearance. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
