In the face of transformations in the history of Applied Linguistics there is still debate over what may or may not be included under this label. The aim of this paper is to revisit the membership issue, based on the beliefs that guided my own trajectory as a researcher. With this in mind, I reflect on the possible meanings of “applied” and the challenges that the expansion of research fields and disciplinary boundaries that are connected to Applied Linguistics have brought. I conclude by claiming that the identity of the area is an open project, but with a purpose in common.
