This slim but attractively presented volume provides a wealth of information on the extended-spectrum β-lactamases and their role in resistance to β-lactam antibiotics. It is authoritatively written by two recognized experts in the field, namely David Livermore from the UK and David Paterson from the USA. The text is divided into five chapters and incorporates a selected bibliography. The first chapter introduces the topic and sets it in the context of nosocomial and community-acquired infections. This is followed by chapters on β-lactam mode of action and resistance, detection of ESBL, risk factors for ESBL infection and prevention and control of ESBL producers. The text is well-illustrated both with black and white and colour diagrams, tables and figures. Overall it is well presented and filled with facts. My only major criticism is that at £14.95 it seems rather expensive for a 58 page, 11 × 19 cm monograph.
