This chapter studies simulations as an approach to ``real-world applications'' which contributes to learner engagement. The latest generation of simulation provides a pragmatic and effective method for ensuring contemporary student engagement and higher-order learning skills of analysis and synthesis, while providing instructors with a vital tool in assessing learning outcomes. A case study of how simulations are used at Cornell University illustrates these benefits.
