The photodissociation and photoionization processes of species of astrophysical interest are reviewed, with emphasis on recent developments. Depth-dependent photodestruction rates by the interstellar radiation field are presented for a number of atoms and small molecules. The photodissociation processes of CO are discused with reference to new laboratory data on the absorption cross sections.
