This chapter covers the general aspects of atomic and molecular theory that are necessary for the understanding of the basic phenomena involved in plasma technology. It begins with a description of Bohr’s atomic model, the hydrogen atom, and its eigenfunctions. This is followed by a review of the structure of more complex atoms and the excited states of diatomic molecules.
