Abstract

Despite a slow start after being introduced in the 1980's, the idea of Stochastic Resonance spurred since remarkable cross disciplinary interest in natural and social sciences. Ten years after our comprehensive review [Rev. Mod. Phys. 70, 223 (1998)] Stochastic Resonance has become a research field on its own. The present Topical Issue presents the most recent applications and extensions of this surprisingly simple and still powerful idea. © 2009 EDP Sciences, SIF, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
