Abstract

This paper describes the techniques of imaging using the scintillations from gamma rays emitted by radioactive isotopes administered to the patient. Improvements to and present-day performance of the modern gamma camera are described in detail. Other topics treated are: relative merits of scanner and camera; the perception of abnormal regions in noisy backgrounds; optimization of the display and data processing; transverse tomography; high-sensitivity, coarse-resolution imaging; solid-state detectors; nuclear magnetic resonance imaging.
