Abstract

The human urge to win at all costs is as old as mankind. History is replete with descriptions of athletes attempting to boost their performance. Ancient Greek wrestlers ate huge quantities of meat, while Norse warriors, 'Beserkers', swallowed hallucinogenic mushrooms to gear up for battle.
