Abstract

The Peru disaster is an example of how different natural and social systems can couple to produce a major failure. Climate change may have inter- vened by destabilizing the high-altitude glacier that caused the zero-survivor obliteration of Yungay in 1970. Possible measures of prevention against siliar accidents are discussed.
