There are few trends as dramatic or universal as the growth of data. The rate of creation of digital information is unprecedented with estimates of its annual growth pegged at double digit rates. Every year brings the addition of more digital information to the already considerable store that constitutes the sum total of human knowledge. One study from the University of California at Berkeley [1] estimates that by 2005, worldwide production of digital data will have grown to almost 100 exabytes (1018 bytes). As more and more organizations adapt to the reality of 24/7 operation, the creation of data accelerates and the need to manage and make it useful grows in importance. © 2006 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
