Evaluating a limp in a growing child is a problem often faced by paediatricians, accident and emergency department doctors, general practitioners, and orthopaedic surgeons. There are many causes, ranging from surgical emergencies to children who need observation only [1]. It is often not possible to know with certainty how serious the condition is at the initial examination, and so it is important to adopt a systematic approach to evaluation. © Springer-Verlag London Limited 2010.
