Abstract

This paper describes the forests, societies and the environment in North America (Canada and USA) and Europe, which includes the Baltic republics but excludes the rest of the former Soviet Union countries. The interrelationship among the forest area, forest types, stock volume, forest management and policy issues, protected areas (biodiversity conservation), forest industries and products are discussed. The population dynamics and the economic prospects that reshape the political and economic conditions of the forest sectors of this region as well as the different environmental problems affecting Europe and North America are also discussed.
