The return to unrestricted, full preinjury-level sports participation following ACL injury and/or surgery has proven to be challenging. Not all patients are able to return to their preinjury sport. There are numerous factors which contribute to a successful outcome following ACL surgery, including successful ACL surgery and well-designed and carried-out postoperative rehabilitation programs. Rehabilitation has become a challenge in recent years, due in part to limited visits, insurance restrictions, and the cost of supervised therapy. The advanced phase of ACL rehabilitation-the return to play/functional activities phase-appears to have suffered the most by insurance visit restrictions. In this chapter, we will discuss the advanced phase of ACL rehabilitation and vital keys to success in returning the athlete to play.
