Migration has taken place throughout human history and currently represents an important livelihood strategy, mainly for the poor in many of the world’s developing countries. The Human Development Report of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) estimated that there are approximately 740 million internal migrants and 214 million international migrants (UNDP 2009). UNDP defined internal migrants as those individuals who move within the borders of a country, usually measured across regional, district, or municipal boundaries, resulting in a change of usual place of residence.
