Abstract

What impact do large-scale plantations have on local populations? Thisis a recurring question, yet it is often discussed without any evidencefrom in-depth case studies. Based on a literature review and a casestudy in Madagascar, this paper shows how Francophone methods forassessing agrarian systems can help to analyse the effects of anagribusiness company on a local setting. It underlines the value of thismethodology in analysing land governance, the wide variety of effects, and, consequently, the diversity of local stakeholders' reactions to thecompany.
