α-Chlorobutyraldehyde and α-chloroheptaldehyde, the structures of which were proved by oxidation to the acid, rcacted with alcoholic sodium methoxide to give the corresponding α-hydroxyacetals. A derivative of the α-hydroxyacetal was oxidized to the corresponding acid as a proof of structure. Dry sodium methoxide reacted with the α-haloaldehydes to give epoxyethers, which were characterized by hydrolysis, methanolysis and reaction with organic acids. © 1954, American Chemical Society.
