Nonadherence is both pervasive and clinically significant for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The goals of this chapter are to illustrate both the scope and the implications of nonadherence to renal dialysis among ESRD patients, as well as to review the empirical literature aimed at identifying the psychosocial determinants of nonadherence. The chapter will also illustrate the assertion that adherence can be better understood by considering the interaction of patient individual differences with treatment and disease-related factors. The chapter concludes by discussing the implications of these issues for the design and implementation of related interventions. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)
