Abstract

The tunneling technology in general, and that of micro-tunneling in particular, is much needed for infrastructure development of Vietnam. In this overview study, the micro-tunneling records, documents and standards in Japan were collected and synthesized so that they could be used in setting up a similar project proposal in Vietnam. It is observed that for micro-tunneling slurry machine is widely used in small and medium diameter tunnels. The proposed project site in Vietnam is located along the To Lich River in Hanoi. Based on design calculation, construction of line 1 was proposed for a 477 m length that would need two intermediate jacking stations at 200 m and 400 m, respectively. Similarly, construction of line 2 was proposed for a 433-m length, which needs one intermediate jacking station at 210 m. The results presented in this paper can be used as an example for a project to be constructed along the To Lich River like Yen Xa Sewage system project.
