Abstract

This paper covers the wave induced hydro-elastic response analysis of a pontoon type very large floating structure (VLFS) or Mega-Float. This coupled Fluid-Structure interaction problem can be solved using modal expansion method in the frequency domain. In this paper, a pontoon type VLFS structure is analyzedfor wave responses. HYDRAN software package has been used for the numerical modeling. Vertical displacement of the structure is obtained in regular waves for different wave periods at three different points (bow, mid-ship and stern) of VLFS for 0° wave heading angle. The variation of the vertical displacement for midsection are also obtained for four different wave headings for various wave periods. Similarly variations of vertical displacements with change in ratio of wavelength to the length of the structure and for two different materials (steel and aluminium) are obtained. Finally, the longitudinal stresses for different wave periods at bow, stern and midship of the structure are compared.
