Same-day total hip arthroplasty

Abstract

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) has excellent short- and long-term clinical results and, in recent years, has been successfully performed with rapid recovery protocols. Over the last few years, there has been a trend toward even shorter hospitalizations, which has been facilitated by further refinements in surgical techniques, advancements in pharmacologic regimens, and modification of postoperative physical therapy pathways. The development of such clinical efficiencies has allowed for the development of truly outpatient or ambulatory hip surgery. Today, there is an increasing interest in ambulatory or outpatient surgeries as there are perceived benefits to the patient, potential cost reduction, and general benefits to the health-care system. The author’s protocols for outpatient surgery are presented.
