In this chapter we discuss some ofthe contributions ofRoger Brockett to problems in optimal control theory, optimization, and analytical mechanics. In particular we consider how ideas in one field have helped to shed light on others. We discuss this interaction not only in the work of Brockett but in our own work and in the work of others which has been inspired by the work of Brockett over the years.
