Abstract

Reviews the book, Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder: A handbook for diagnosis and treatment. Third edition by Russell A. Barkley, and Kevin R. Murphy (2005). This book covers the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD across the lifespan, with specific chapters on adolescents and adults. Although it is well recognized that medication, particularly stimulant medication, is the standard and most effective treatment available, there are good chapters on counseling and training parents in large groups in the community, on specific family techniques for dealing with adolescents, on treatments in the school setting, and on student-mediated conflict resolution programs. This is a readable, up-to-date standard reference book for anyone studying ADHD or practicing in the field of ADHD. This edition well reflects the substantial advances in the field. Readers who currently rely on the second edition would be well advised to purchase this book and the accompanying Clinical Workbook. This book has been favorably reviewed by several other experts in the ADHD field. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved)
