Abstract

Symbolic calculations, unlike numeric calculations discussed so far, deal with manipulation of mathematical expressions. This book will not be complete without a discussion of this topic. Symbolic calculations are well supported by a number of commercial programs, such as Wolfram Mathematica, Maple, and by noncommercial, such as GNU Octave. Unlike these programs that use specialized languages for scientific computing, DMelt provides elements of symbolic computations using general-purpose programming languages on the Java platform
