Abstract

Some reasons for the compressibility of filter cakes have been outlined, and mathematical formulations for their formation and structure have been developed. Two alternative and quite different ways of solving the equations have been described and some illustrative results given. However, to elucidate and validate the assumptions of different models and to develop appropriate constitutive equations relating cake resistance (or permeability) and porosity to solids pressure will require more work. At present the only way to obtain enough data for these mathematical models is through detailed laboratory experimentation.
