The aim of this chapter is to give an overview of the development of spray painting technology in the automotive industry through this author's over 30 plus years' experience in the industry, both in automobile manufacturing and spray equipment manufacturing. The author's perspective reflects monozukuri, the Japanese term for manufacturing that refers not only to technical issues but to traditional Japanese values and philosophies centered around the art and craft of making things. The chapter touches on the history of current spray paint technology and offers the author's view on future directions and challenges for automobile painting technology. The author discusses the evolution of painting technology as an art rather than science and highlights the need for scientific study of the kind the rest of the volume offers.
